Exposition Homo Spatius
Cité du design
Saint-Etienne / France

From 3 November 2021 to 30 January 2022, the Cité du Design offered its visitors a novel exhibition exploring the fields of science, design and imagination. The result of a collaboration between the Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES) and the Cité du Design, the exhibition questions the challenges of conquering space and offers its visitors the opportunity to re-experience the epic of space exploration in conjunction with developments in design.

Blending science and fantasy, the exhibition embodies various projects by designers, artists, engineers, architects and writers, revealing the connection between two enchanting epics - space exploration and design.

To separate the different exhibition areas from each other, Gerriets made a series of curtains from the decorative fabric MIRAGE, whose metallic look and retro colours perfectly match the theme of the exhibition.

La Chauve-Souris
Opéra de Rennes
France

"The Bat" was appreciated for its musical qualities as well as for its stage design and is an operetta in three acts whose music was composed by Johann Strauss. Inspired by the play Le Réveillon by the French authors Meilhac and Halévy, La Chauve-Souris was adapted to the Viennese context by the librettist Richard Genée.

Legend has it that Johann Strauss composed the music for it in one go: The composer is said to have locked himself in his study for 43 days, where in a moment of creative ecstasy he is said to have pushed his genius to the limits of delirium.

"The Bat" takes the audience into the Austro-Hungarian upper class of the 19th century and portrays an era and its ills. Johann Strauss's masterpiece is rich in confusions and unexpected twists, but also features a fair amount of cynicism. It is not only a social satire, but also an expression of longing for a bygone era of gentility and refinement. The dramatic action takes place at the summer home of Prince Orlofsky where, despite champagne and glitter, dastardly actions and a desire for revenge cause trouble during a masked ball.

The play is led by the experienced baton of Claude Schnitzler, who has conducted this work dozens of times at various venues, including the Volksoper in Vienna. More than 80 singers, choristers, dancers and musicians are involved in the performance, for which sumptuous costumes have been made in the workshops of the Opéra de Rennes and the Angers Nantes Opéra.

This opera, sung in German with French surtitles, was recorded on video. As part of the Opéra sur écran(s) project, it will be broadcast in June 2022 in more than 30 cities in the regions of Brittany and Pays de la Loire, on eight local television stations and on France Musique.

Tout Mon Amour
CDN La Comédie de St-Etienne
France

Laurent Mauvignier's first play, Tout mon Amour, is the result of the work of this captivating writer whose style shines through in this production that questions the boundaries between real and mental spaces. "Tout mon amour" tells the story of a married couple whose six-year-old daughter disappeared without a trace more than ten years ago. Without psychological demonstration or pathos, Laurent Mauvignier offers his audience a drama with crime thriller elements against the background of tragic family events.

The director dedicates his work to the most intimate themes such as grief, family and absence, and thus manages to give a place to the unspeakable. The play's writing in different sequences gives it a rhythm that allows the audience to experience each character's difficulty in moving on after certain traumas.

Pierre Nouvel's set design is based on our light grey CS VOILE, which divides the stage into two parts by the diagonal. This boundary makes it possible to create two main playing areas, one of which is located behind the CS VOILE and clouds the view of the spectator through a play of transparency and diffuse, warm light.

gw-Gerriets-2020-Einder-Amsterdam-Berlin-Lasergewebe-small.jpg
EINDER
Amsterdam / Netherlands

Inspired by his album "Vrij van Dromen" (De Vlieger / Job Jobse, 2020), Elias Mazian (DJ and producer) and his friend Boris Acket (audiovisual artist) were looking for a way to artistically present textile materials as repeating, flowing forms and in motion. The kinetic, 30 m long audiovisual installation was realised with the help of numerous motors and fans, which are intended to represent the lightness of the natural movements of the textile on stage – a laser fabric by Gerriets.

In collaboration with the creative designers and engineers of Lumus Instruments and the spatial designer Toon Rooijmans, the project quickly evolved from the original idea of a "backdrop" into a poetic piece. The parameters are controllable, but each synthetically generated wave behaves individually - like a vertical water surface that transforms into different weather conditions and appearances through movement, light and sound.

In this way EINDER aims to make people think about the way humans control nature - how we look at it and how we always want to control something. EINDER is a hypnotic work that never once behaves in the same way and seems to be alive in every space it occupies.

Musée d'Orsay

Tracing the obvious and the hidden meaning in James Tissot's works was part of the exhibition concept for the large retrospective at the Musée d'Orsay Paris. In the exhibition space, unostentatious CS VOILE curtains by Gerriets surround expressive exhibits full of clear and bright colours. Alongside with the lighting concept, this contrast sets a focus on selected works, the ambiguity of which may become apparent to the viewer upon closer observation.
