The hangar of the former Tempelhof Airport as a venue for the Komische Oper Berlin

During the renovation of its main building, the Komische Oper Berlin is using various alternative venues - including Hangar 4 at the former Tempelhof Airport. Hangar 4 is a very spacious, industrial space that has been converted for opera productions such as "MESSIAS" (2024) and "Jesus Christ Superstar" (planned for September 2025). The production "The Raft of the Medusa" already took place in the neighboring Hangar 1 in 2023. Around 1,800 seats are available for performances in Hangar 4.

As the hangar was not designed for musical performances, extensive measures were required to create acoustics suitable for operas and concerts. The challenges resulted in particular from the large dimensions, the robust surfaces and the long reverberation time of the hall.

This leads to challenges in the bass range in particular, as classical music is also amplified in this spacious room. A special feature is the use of variable, inflatable acoustic absorbers and bass absorbers from the aQflex and aQtube systems. These systems allow the room acoustics to be flexibly adapted to the respective staging. In addition, the reverberation in the bass and lower mid-range is significantly reduced, so that optimum use of the hangar can be ensured.
