Transformation in an instant –
Discovery Cube Science Center / Orange County, CA, USA

New Jersey, 12. September 2016

The Discovery Cube Science Center is a museum that focuses on exhibits for the scientific education of young children.

Gerriets designed and installed a complex audiovisual system that converts an existing expo hall into a movie theater and back again easily and quickly at Discovery Cube’s Orange County, California location.

The system includes a 19 m (62') wide x 8 m (27') high acoustically transparent Gerriets-GAMMALUX MIRCO projection screen. The microperferation of the screen allows for the flow of sound through the screen from retractable speakers placed directly behind it. The screen hangs on a 19 m (62') wide Gerriets-MEGASCREEN TOUR system that rolls up the screen when not in use. Gerriets also installed velour masking curtains mounted to a CHAINBEAM track system to allow the system to adapt to different projection formats. A custom hoist system retracts these curtains out of the way while the expo hall is in use. To block the area behind the projection screen, a retractable black out curtain made from velour is installed on a fully automated 21 m (69’) wide STRATUS vertical lift system. The entire system is stored high in the air above the expo hall and can be deployed in minutes.
