Side Edges for Drapes

Hem

Standard side hem is turned and folded twice and then single stitched. Our standard him is 2" (5 cm) wide but other sizes are possible.

Webbing

Webbing is sewn on to reinforce the side edge, which is important when curtains or drapery will be stretched from the sides using clamps or other means, these can also be grommeted if required. If wishing to tension a scrim or bobbinet, it is recommended to not have a single line of webbing but to space them in tabs to allow the fabric to stretch, otherwise "bellying" can occur.

Hook and Loop

Hook and Loop tape is sewn on for attaching to other curtains or to frames. Typically, the softer "loop" side is preferred to be sewn on to the curtain, while the harder "hook" side is attached to the scenery or frame, this is because the loop side is more malleable, making storage and shipping of a folded curtain easier. If wishing to tension a scrim, bobbinet or a screen, it is recommended to not have a single line of hook and loop tape but to space them in tabs to allow the material to stretch, otherwise "bellying" can occur.

Serged Edge

Used when a curtain is made with the full width of the raw material, serging at the side hem reinforces the sides and helps prevent fraying.
