Large-scale customization for a central element of the stage design
The production of The Mastersingers of Nuremberg at The Bayreuth Festival 2025 presents the opera as a lively mixture of historical scenery and modern, sometimes ironic elements.
The stage design by Andrew D. Edwards combines the architecture of historic Nuremberg with eye-catching symbols such as an oversized colorful balloon cow that floats above the festival meadow, a large-scale staircase construction that serves as a changeable playing surface for chorus and crowd scenes. These visually powerful motifs create a special atmosphere that makes the themes of tradition, art and social change tangible.
In addition, the semi-circular background wall in the third act is a central design feature. For this backdrop, Gerriets supplied the specially printed projection foil EVEN, which was printed with a sky motif and illuminated from behind. The wall opens up the room and combines the scenes into an atmospheric overall experience. The result is an atmospheric, sunny background that significantly supports the production.
