The Royal Opera at the Palace of Versailles, which opened on the occasion of the wedding celebrations of the Dauphin, later King Louis XVI, and Archduchess Marie-Antoinette, celebrated its 250th anniversary on 16 May 2020. To mark the occasion, the Malandain Ballet Biarritz dedicated a performance to the famous Queen Marie-Antoinette, retracing her tragic fate from her arrival at court in Versailles to the Revolution. Thierry Malandain embroidered a tailor-made costume for her for a colourful performance dedicated to Versailles and its Royal Opera.

After beginning his career as a classical dancer at the Paris Opera, with the Ballet du Rhin and later with the Ballet Théâtre Français de Nancy, Thierry Malandain devoted himself to choreography from 1986. With the support of the Ministry of Culture and Communication and the city of Biarritz, he founded the first contemporary choreography centre in the classical style in 1998. A member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts since 2019, Thierry Malandain is known far beyond our borders and has been honoured with numerous prizes and awards.
